Last week global communications firm Golin launched a report on the relative success of legal firms measured not just by the usual factor of revenues, but interestingly also taking into account their media coverage.
They used the profiles of both Senior Partners and their firms to conjure up a top 50 which to some extent features the usual suspects (DLA, Clifford Chance, Linklaters) but interestingly also highlights the successes of some smaller firms who you may not have heard of before but have clearly got their media savvy on.
Whilst the research is somewhat innovative, and certainly puts an interesting spin on perceived ‘success’, it does however fail to take into account smaller firms which provide legal services that aren’t deemed to be of much interest to the media. Wills and Probate aren’t generally considered sexy enough to fill column inches but dosn’t mean that a firm isn’t successful if these are their bread and butter, and then there’s the area of the law that rarely is reported on because clients don’t want details made public – litigation!
So how much credence should we pay to this latest study?
The answer is possibly as inconclusive as the study itself, in that whilst it is indeed intriguing and indicative of our media-rich times where at every turn we need to find new ways of celebrating success because an internet troll is only a click away from spewing forth their subjective experience, we also need to treat each poll as part of our own research, rather than definitive proof of a firm’s worth.
That said, it is great to see that firms of all sizes are embracing the media as not just a tool to drive turnover, but as an essential part of their business strategy.
