In December 2023, Gartner, an American research and advisory firm, predicted that by 2028, organic search traffic will decrease by 50% or more as consumers embrace generative AI-powered search

In a recent webinar, digital marketing specialist and best-selling author Neil Patel and his team addressed this headline. In this article, Scala’s Marketing Executive, Ben Sollitt, provides some insight into the topics covered and how this might affect marketing moving forward.

Zero Click Searches

A zero-click search occurs when a user searches for something on Google but doesn’t click on any search results. Whilst Google searches overall have also risen, the introduction of comprehensive AI overviews has led to fewer website clicks/visits. In addition to this, the trend primarily affects informational search instances where users are looking for specific answers or facts, meaning advertisers remain largely unaffected as their Google Ads often target different types of searches.

Whilst some commentators assume AI and social media have diminished Google’s influence, the data suggests otherwise. As a result, Neil Patel advises advertisers and marketers to concentrate on attracting revenue-focused leads through targeted keywords, rather than trying to attract a higher volume of generic traffic.

It’s important to remember that all business types can still rank in zero-click searches through features like Google’s information snippets and business profiles. For instance, if one of your website articles provides a clear answer to a searched query, Google may highlight an excerpt from it, meaning it’s more important than ever for firms to produce high-quality, informative content, as this will improve the chances of appearing in these prominent search results.

Brand Strength

A common theme that underpinned the webinar was how important it is to have a a strong brand identity and presence that is supported by high-quality content. This is because almost half (44%) of Google searches are branded; therefore, users are looking to specific brands for expertise that they trust. In response to this, Google are improving the ranking of forum sites like Reddit and Quora, meaning user-generated responses might be ranking ahead of an optimised website. However, this presents an opportunity to encourage user discussion on third-party sites including LinkedIn or Facebook.

The webinar also highlights the need for having an updated keyword strategy. This is because, on average, 69% of clicks are going to the top five organic search results for any keyword or search term. Consequently, identifying keywords that are relevant and have a high potential in terms of search volume can be an incredibly effective method of driving targeted traffic to a site.

Moreover, users are increasingly using longer searches, as an average search is now 3-5 words long. This means there’s greater potential in longer and more specific keyword searches. This trend comes as more users are utilising voice searches.

Giving Google What It Wants, and it’s not AI-generated content!

Alongside brand strength, another important factor is ensuring content is optimised so Google ranks it higher. To ensure content is doing this, it must be informative, relevant and useful to target users. Through a recent algorithm change, Google is prioritising against AI-generated content, instead promoting content that is engaging and high quality.  This means sites need to avoid utilising a high volume of generic AI-generated content, as it simply won’t rank.

The panel also discussed how content needs to demonstrate expertise, citing reputable sources and highlighting the authors credentials and achievements to indicate their understanding of the topic. This is especially true when it comes to legal, financial, and health-related content.

In conjunction with utilising unique and high-quality written content, the webinar also stressed the importance of ensuring search engine optimisation (SEO) is perfected. Carrying out a site audit is an important measure in ensuring all SEO issues are being addressed. Audits often pick up key issues like slow pages, broken links or duplicate content.

The Power Of PR

PR is a powerful way to strengthen a brand while creating high-quality, reputable content. Digital PR is more important than ever; earning mentions from authoritative third-party sites boosts both the image and visibility of a brand among relevant audiences. Industry awards, publications, and thought leadership can be an incredibly effective way of not only boosting PR presence but also cementing the position of a brand within their certain market. Whether a business is joining conversations or leading them, staying active in relevant online discussions is imperative.

Social First Approach

A key theme in the webinar was that online content is very much a multi-faceted approach, and while search trends begin to shift away from Google, audiences are still online; they just might be somewhere else. Therefore, social media plays a key supporting role when it comes to maximising digital PR and branding.

During the webinar, the panel suggests it is important to approach social media with a focus on the formats and styles that work on social platforms. This includes:

  • Short form videos
  • Eye-catching visuals,
  • Engaging captions
  • Trending hashtags.

Moving Forward

As AI becomes more dominant, digital marketing efforts need to utilise both first-party and third-party data. This means there needs to be a greater emphasis on collecting customer insights and data that then inform marketing efforts. Rather than relying solely on the reports of online platforms and tools like Google Analytics and social media reports.

An effective method mentioned in the webinar to gather customer data and insight is through gated online tools, valuable resources, or in-person events. Capturing this data not only enhances marketing efforts but also builds a strong email contact list, which in turn can be incredibly effective.

Utilising Scala’s Expertise
