Award Writing Tips to Help You Craft a Winning Entry

The 2025 ceremony takes place on 27th November in Manchester, but the submission deadline is fast approaching – entries must be received by 12th September.

1. Choose Your Category Wisely 
Start by reading through the criteria for each category carefully. This will help you identify the ones that align best with your achievements – and where you stand the strongest chance of winning. 

2. Enter More Than One Category (if applicable) 
If your achievements span multiple areas, don’t limit yourself. Entering more than one category can increase your chances of being shortlisted and recognised. 

3. Start Early 
You may need input from colleagues – including financial data, case details or client feedback – so begin the process as soon as possible to give yourself enough time to gather everything you need. 

4. Understand the Judging Criteria 
Before you begin writing, make sure you are completely clear on what the judges are looking for. Structure your responses around the specific criteria – not what you want to say, but what they’ve asked for. 

5. Be Clear, Honest and Evidence-Based 
Answer each question directly and back up your claims with real evidence – whether that’s data, client feedback or case outcomes. Remember: all information must be accurate and truthful. 

6. Stick to the Word Count 
Most submissions will have a strict word limit – often 1,000 words in total. If your chosen category has five questions, that means a maximum of 200 words per answer. Don’t risk part of your entry being cut off due to being over the limit. Write, refine, and trim. 

7. Avoid Legal Jargon 
Assume the judges are not legally trained. Use plain, professional language and keep your points clear and succinct. The easier your entry is to understand, the stronger it will be. 

8. Get a Second (and Third) Opinion 
Ask colleagues to review your first draft. Feedback from others can help you spot what’s missing, what needs clarification, and what’s most compelling. Award entries are rarely perfect first time – take the time to get it right.
